The Carson Valley is one of Nevada's first settled areas and includes this
state's first permanent settlement, Genoa. This book contains birth, marriage
and death records for Douglas County for many of the county's earliest families.
Lying just north of beautiful Lake Tahoe, Reno, Nevada grew out
of the Gold Rush in the American west. Since its creation in the mid-1800's the
population has alternated from growing to shrinking, and in 1910 the population
of the area, although shrinking, stood at about 3500.
Starting in the early 1860's, Virginia City and Gold Hill, the two primary towns
of Storey County, grew rapidly into boomtowns, their populations swelling with
miners, merchants and their families. The residents of Storey County were a
diverse group, the wealthy, the poor, the educated and those who signed their
name with an "X".
